Location: Charleston International Airport
Owner: Charleston County Aviation Authority
The project scope included the complete reconstruction of Taxiway Alpha at Charleston International Airport and repairs to Taxiway Bravo and Taxiway Golf. Taxiway Alpha is being improved from aircraft Design Group IV to Aircraft Design Group V, with improved shoulders, improved taxiway safety areas and improved lighting and signage.
This project began with a detailed alternatives analysis to determine the best geometric design for the taxiway. Alternatives were developed that ranged from maintaining current alignments to new parallel taxiways to Runways 03/21 and 15/33. These alternatives were developed and reviewed by the FAA for compliance with FAA geometric criteria.
The CHS Repair Taxiways project was accomplished in five phases to ensure full operation of both runways during construction. Areas of work adjacent to runways were limited to night time operations so a safe shoulder condition was in place adjacent to the runways each morning when flight operations resumed. ADC also provided Title II services
