Buist Academy was built in 1928 in downtown Charleston. Since the existing building did not meet the seismic criteria set forth in the International Building Code (IBC), the school was demolished with the exception of three historic facades. A new three-story building was constructed to tie in with the historic portion of the building on the 1.5-acre site.
The 90,900 square-foot school accommodates approximately 500 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The facility includes a service area, garden and playground area in the rear of the school. The playground area includes miscellaneous play equipment, basketball goals, and sport court surfacing.
Sidewalks that were removed as part of the demo package along Calhoun Street and Anson Streets were replaced. The new utilities will tie into existing infrastructure in the right-of-way along Calhoun and Anson Streets.
