ADC provided the structural design for the construction of a helipad on the roof of the seven-story South Tower of Roper Hospital, a landlocked facility located in historic Charleston, SC. The helipad needed to support a six-ton helicopter that will be transporting patients and paramedics to Roper Hospital. The structural challenges included consideration of a number of load cases, including impact due to crash of the design helpcopter, determining how to distribute the structural load while avoiding structural retrofit work underneath the roof to allow uniterrupted function of the hospital, creating two exits off the roof, and complying with the Federal Aviation Authority requirement in the placement of the pad.
