For the past few weeks parents have shopped for backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, and pencil pouches so their children are prepared to succeed this school year. But many children will show up for the first day of school empty-handed. Their families can't afford supplies. Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against these kids and without help, many will never have a chance at success.
Today Burns Elementary opened its doors for the first day of school and welcomed some of Charleston County’s most economically disadvantaged children. Many of the children live in poverty. Many go hungry. And many are even homeless. Inspired by a Post and Courier article about Burns Elementary that ran August 2014, ADC Engineering started collecting school supplies for the school. Today ADC delivered backpacks, composition books, binders, pencils, markers, disinfectant wipes, Kleenex, scissors, and more! ADC hopes that these supplies help the dedicated teachers and staff at Burns make a difference in the lives of these students. If you are interested in contributing supplies to the school, please contact Tiffany Taylor at (843)745-7113 or tiffany_taylor@charleston.k12.sc.us
“The way kids break out of the cycle of poverty is through education, and at Burns Elementary they are trying. They could just use a little help.” - Brian Hicks, Post and Courier
