This spring Nick's on King Street was evacuated when the building's stability began to deteriorate.

The 200-year-old building's facade was deflecting outward due to a lack of connection to the floor levels. Mark Dillon, ADC's president and principal structural engineer, received the emergency call from Renew Urban and went to inspect the building. In order to stabilize the building and provide a safe work environment to facilitate the reconstruction, supports had to be placed to brace the front of the structure. But traditionally designed supports would interfere with pedestrian traffic and contractor work space.

This emergency situation needed an original solution. In only 78 days from the first phone call to steel erection, ADC designed a front wall stabilizing system that braced the front wall, provided a pedestrian safe walkway and allowed contractor access. Renew Urban shored up the building with ADC’s system that was designed specifically for this project and has never been used in this configuration before.

ADC and Renew Urban saved the facade with a system of 135,000 pounds of concrete and steel that anchor for wind loads and to prevent further deflection of the front wall.
