The assault landing zone (ALZ) at North Auxiliary Airfield in North, SC is where pilots train to land planes on short or incomplete runways. North's ALZ was originally constructed of asphalt and it was deteriorating. The broken asphalt was a hazard to aircraft and needed compete reconstructions. Work to reconstruct the 3,500-foot runway included demolition of the existing airfield pavement, replacing the runway, new airfield lighting and signage, pavement markings, sodding and grassing.
